Family doctor sexually assaulted patient, police say

Arturo Vargas

Montebello police are investigating whether a family doctor arrested Wednesday on suspicion of sexually assaulting a female patient has committed other similar crimes.

Police said Arturo Vargas, 41, molested a female patient during an examination at Kaiser Permanente's office in Montebello.

Vargas surrendered to authorities Wednesday and was booked on suspicion of sexual penetration by a foreign object, sexual exploitation by a physician and battery by fraud.

The doctor was later released on $200,000 bail.

Montebello police have scheduled a news conference Thursday to provide further information about the allegations.
