Man pounded puppy on floor like ‘bag of sand,’ friend says

A man who was jailed after allegedly beating his 4-month-old Siberian husky so severely it had to be euthanized was pounding the dog on the floor 'like he was a bag of sand,' his roommate said.

Phillip Shawn Rich was arrested at his home in Crest on Sunday after veterinarians alerted the county Department of Animal Services that the dog appeared to have been beaten.

Rich brought the dog, named Knight, to the veterinarians for care but his description of how the dog was injured did not fit the injuries, officials said.

In an interview with Fox 5 San Diego, Rich's roommate said he witnessed the alleged animal abuse.

"I saw him take the dog legs and pound the animal on the floor like he was a bag of sand," the 26-year-old suspect's friend said. "When I saw what Rich was doing I did stop him and force him to get the animal help. It just broke my heart seeing this dog in so much pain."

Rich is being held at San Diego County jail on $25,000 bail. The case has been turned over to the district attorney's office.
