Homicides reported in Winnetka
A 17-year-old soccer player at El Camino Real High School died Wednesday night after he was gunned down in front of his home, police said.

The shooting broke out in the 6900 block of Cozycroft Avenue in Winnetka after the assailant went to the unidentified teen's home and apparently asked to talk to him outside, the Los Angeles Police Department said.

Detectives at the scene initially said the shooter was a teenage girl, but later they said that they were investigating whether that was true. "They're kind of backing away from that," Officer Karen Rayner told The Times.

A classmate told KTLA-TV Channel 5 that the victim was well-liked.  "He was just a great kid," Sergio Hernandez said.

Detectives were at the scene gathering evidence. No additional details were immediately available.

Since January 2007, at least 15 homicides have been reported in Winnetka, according to the Times Homicide Report database.
