Eight men were arrested when the U.S. Coast Guard intercepted two boats near Santa Catalina Island. The Coast Guard said one boat was carrying a ton of marijuana.

Coast Guard crews were patrolling the waters Tuesday night when they spotted two vessels on radar, Petty Officer Adam Eggers told the Los Angeles Daily News.

A short pursuit ensued, ending at 11:45 p.m. with the arrest of four men who were aboard the boat allegedly containing the marijuana. The other four were in a separate vessel, but were also taken into custody, Eggers said.

The men -- and the illicit cargo -- were transferred to Immigration and Customs Enforcement, authorities said. The U.S. attorney's office is expected to file drug trafficking charges against the four men on the boat carrying the drugs.
