91-year-old driver plows car into O.C. doughnut shop, injuring 3

January 30, 2012 |  4:56 pm

A 91-year-old woman driving a vehicle in Orange plowed into a doughnut shop patio, injuring three men before she accelerated and smashed into a nearby wall, police said Monday afternoon.

The woman apparently hit her accelerator pedal while her Cadillac Northstar's transmission was in reverse and drove backward into the patio of DK's Donuts in the 3700 block of East Chapman Avenue, police said.

"She put her foot down on the accelerator and for some reason didn't stop," Sgt. Dan Adams of the Orange Police Department told The Times.

The woman then shifted into drive and accelerated through a driveway and into an alley, where she crashed into the block wall of a residential property, Adams said.

The three men were taken to hospitals and treated for minor injuries, Adams said. The woman was also taken to a hospital to for a checkup but was not injured.

Police Department investigators were trying to determine what caused the accident, which occurred about 10:45 a.m Monday. No additional details were immediately available.
