Woman dies in fall from Queen Mary

Queenmary
A 26-year-old woman died Monday night after falling  75 feet from a Queen Mary walkway into the frigid waters of the Long Beach Harbor, authorities said.

Long Beach Fire Department spokesman Steve Yamamoto told the Associated Press that firefighters received a call about 8:35 p.m. Monday that a woman had fallen off the ship and a 40-year-old man jumped about 15 feet into the water in a vain attempt to rescue her. The man  was taken to a hospital for treatment of hypothermia.

Yamamoto says two Long Beach police officers who jumped in the water to help with the rescue were not injured.

The circumstances of the woman's fall and other details were not immediately known.
