Sheriff's deputies investigate death at Men's Central Jail

December 9, 2011 |  4:37 pm

Sheriff's deputies are investigating the death of a man found in a cell at Men's Central Jail with wounds that appear to have been caused by another inmate, authorities said Friday.

Homicide investigators on the scene are gathering evidence and looking for potential witnesses, according to a source in the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. The source said it was unclear if the wounds were stab wounds.

The death was discovered at 12:58 p.m. Friday, but Det. Pete Gomez said the department had no information on a possible suspect.

"Any time there's a death, we're going to send homicide detectives,"  Gomez said. "We haven't verified that it was a homicide."

Gomez added that authorities will investigate the death as they would any crime. No additional victim information was immediately available.
