O.C. deputy shoots fleeing armed robbery suspect in Lake Forest

An armed robber who fled into a residential neighborhood after holding up a Lake Forest cellphone shop was shot and wounded Tuesday morning by an Orange County sheriff’s deputy, authorities reported.

Wearing a mask and armed with a handgun, the man pointed the weapon at several customers in the AT&T store on El Toro Road before demanding money and fleeing, authorities said.

As the robber was running away, a store security guard borrowed a local resident's car and chased the suspect into an adjacent neighborhood but ended up crashing into a parking car while trying to call authorities, said Jim Amormino, spokesman for the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.

A sheriff’s investigator who was working nearby responded, and the suspect was shot at least twice trying to run from the scene, Amormino said.

The suspect’s injuries, he said, did not appear to be life-threatening. The shooting is being investigated by the Orange County district attorney’s office.
