A gunman armed with a rifle opened fire at an Edison building in Irwindale Friday, hitting a male and female employee before apparently taking his own life.

Irwindale police did not identify either victim, and the extent of their injuries was not immediately available.

Police Chief Dennis Smith told KCAL-TV that the gunman was dead and that employees were going to be escorted out of the building.

The shooting prompted a lockdown at several schools as officials determined whether the gunman was still alive.

Edison has not confirmed the number of injuries, but law enforcement authorities said people had been transported to hospitals.
