Firefighters respond to carport fire in Hollywood

December 31, 2011 |  6:50 pm

Los Angeles firefighters were called to a suspected arson fire in the carport of a Hollywood apartment building, raising concerns that a still-on-the-loose arsonist was trying to add to at least 35 suspected arson fires set since early Friday.

It took 10 firefighters six minutes to extinguish the flames that were confined to a vehicle in the building in the 1300 block of Mansfield Avenue. Busy firefighters did not immediately say whether the latest blaze fit the profile of the other fires recently set across a wide swath of Los Angeles, but it shared similarities.

"This fire involves a carport and a vehicle,'' said Brian Humphrey, Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman, adding that arson investigators were on the scene.

For emergency responders, it was an unnerving start to New Year's Eve.
