California soldier killed in Afghanistan

A soldier from California has been killed in combat in Afghanistan, the Department of Defense announced Tuesday.

Sgt. Christopher L. Muniz, 24, from New Cuyama in Santa Barbara County, was killed Sunday in Kunar province in eastern Afghanistan when Taliban fighters attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device.

Muniz was assigned to the 3rd Brigade Special Troops Battalion, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division from Schofield Barracks, Hawaii.
