Woman loses right arm, some toes trying to hop freight train

A 27-year-old woman had her right arm and the toes on her right foot amputated early Tuesday morning when she and a male companion attempted to hop a moving freight train after a night of drinking, San Diego County Sheriff's Department officials said.

The 34-year-old male companion successfully hopped on to the train in downtown San Diego about 1:18 a.m. Tuesday, but when he looked back, he saw the woman lying on the tracks, officials said.

The train was traveling about 7 mph. The woman had been struck by a tanker car. Her companion jumped off the train and took her to a hospital, where her injuries were treated.
