The person killed was identified Thursday as Juan Manuel Diaz, 36, whom officers found with a gunshot wound in the driver's seat of a Chevy van, said Santa Ana Police Cmdr. Jeff Owens.

Police had been responding to a traffic collision Wednesday night near the corner of South Grand and East Edinger avenues, Owens said. They also found a 23-year-old male passenger in the van wounded by gunfire.

Diaz was pronounced dead at the scene, while the condition of the passenger was unclear Thursday morning.

Owens said two adults and three juveniles unrelated to the shooting and not in the van sustained non-life-threatening injuries from the traffic collision.

They were taken to a hospital for treatment. Owens said the department’s gang homicide unit was investigating the case.
