Santa Ana winds expected in L.A. area

November 28, 2011 | 11:07 pm

The National Weather Service is predicting that powerful Santa Ana winds could blow across the Los Angeles area beginning Wednesday and last through Saturday.

The northeast winds could reach 80 mph in the mountains and 60 mph in  the valleys, the Weather Service said. The winds are expected to begin blowing Wednesday night and peak Thursday and Friday with weaker breezes lasting through Saturday.

The dry winds will result in low relative humidity and increase the threat of  brushfires, the agency said. Motorists could also be affected.

"Driving conditions could be hazardous for high-profile vehicles and blowing dust and sand could lower visibilities to near zero in some areas," the Weather Service said in a statement.
