Porn initiative mandating condoms for actors is closer to ballot

Advocacy groups say they have gathered more than enough signatures to get an initiative on the June ballot that would require porn actors in the city of Los Angeles to use condoms.

A coalition known as For Adult Industry Responsibility planned to hold a news conference Wednesday to announce it has gathered 64,000 signatures, well over the 41,000 needed to qualify for the 2012 ballot.

State law already requires film actors to use condoms during sex scenes, but it’s not widely enforced, said Ged Kenslea, a spokesman for the AIDS Healthcare Foundation, one of the groups promoting the initiative.

The initiative would tie any film permits to the use of condoms on the set, Kenslea said.

The signature campaign began in August and wound up a month ahead of the Dec. 23 deadline.

“The feedback we’ve gotten is that this proposition has been well-received in all areas of the city,” Kenslea said.
