Oxnard mother arrested after baby son dies of head injuries

An Oxnard mother was arrested in connection with the death of her 11-month-old boy, who died after suffering head injuries, police said Monday afternoon.

The boy suffered from bleeding in the front part of his brain and hemorrhaging of his eyes. He died over the weekend at Children's Hospital in Los Angeles, the Oxnard Police Department said.

Josefina Sierra Hernandez, 31, was arrested on suspicion of causing injury to a child under 8 resulting in death, the department said in a statement. She was being held at the Ventura County Jail in lieu of $500,000 bail.

Detectives were alerted Wednesday by personnel at Ventura County Medical Center, where the baby was being treated. The child died Saturday, police said.

Anyone with information is asked to call Oxnard police at (805) 385-7740. Anonymous tips can be left at (800) 222-8477.
