Papaivai Masaga was on foot, crossing in the 22000 block of Main Street, when he was struck by a car, said Lt. Fred Corral of the Los Angeles County coroner's office. He was pronounced dead at 10:10 p.m.

Masaga was hit by a black Ford Mustang, with a model year between 1994 and 1998, said Sgt. Damon Jones of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Carson station.

The Mustang probably has significant body damage to the front passenger side, Jones said, and was last seen heading westbound on West 223rd Street. Detectives are continuing to investigate.

Anyone with information on this case is asked to call the sheriff's Carson station at (310) 830-1123.
