A man was shot and killed in front of his 8-year-old son in South Los Angeles on Sunday night, police said.

The man, whose name was not released, was jump-starting his car in the 500 block of West 84th Street at about 8:40 p.m. when a man approached him and the shooting took place, said Officer Roger Aguirre at the Los Angeles Police Department's 77th Street station.

Aguirre said police believe that the shooting took place during a robbery attempt. The victim's young son was with him when he was shot, he said. He had no description of the suspect.

The victim died en route to the hospital, Aguirre said.
