Conrad Murray guilty: Jackson family reacts to verdict [Updated]
At the announcement of the guilty verdict in the trial of Dr. Conrad Murray, there was a gasp in the second row of the courtroom where Jackson’s parents sat along with his siblings Randy, Jermaine, Rebbe and La Toya, and other friends.
The singer’s mother, Katherine, ran a tissue under her gold-rimmed glasses as her son Randy squeezed her shoulders. Jackson’s father, Joe, sat stonefaced.
As soon as the judge ordered Murray remanded, four burly deputies surrounded him and handcuffed him. His mother raised her hand to him and he nodded toward her and his girlfriend, Nicole Alvarez, as he was escorted out a side door to a holding cell.
[Updated at 2:25 p.m.: The Jackson family left the courthouse without holding a news conference.
La Toya Jackson stopped and waved before getting into a Rolls Royce. She thanked the crowd as she held a bouquet of roses. A few minutes later, she tweeted one word: "VICTORY!!!!!!"
Jermaine Jackson got into a black Cadillac Escalade; Joe and Katherine Jackson left in a Mercedes sedan without comment.]
Murray is scheduled for sentencing on Nov. 29.
The 58-year-old cardiologist, who was charged with the lowest possible homicide offense, faces a maximum sentence of four years in state prison and a minimum sentence of probation.
Murray now also faces the probable loss of his medical license. California authorities already suspended his right to practice, but medical boards in Nevada and Texas agreed to wait to evaluate licenses he holds in their states until after the criminal case.
