Sole survivor of Seal Beach shooting rampage 'improving'
This post has been amended. Please see details below.
The sole surviving victim of a mass shooting at a Seal Beach hair salon is improving, but her daughter was among those killed by the gunman.
Police have not officially identified the victims of the shooting that left eight dead at Salon Meritage, but the alleged gunman, Scott Evans Dekraai, 42, was arrested.
Witnesses said Dekraai appeared to be targeting his former wife, a stylist at Salon Meritage on Pacific Coast Highway.
Family friends said Hattie Stretz, 73, was the sole survivor of the rampage.
The Los Alamitos Rotary Club, which Stretz's husband belonged to, sent a message to members saying she had been taken to the hospital and was undergoing surgery, said Rotary member and family friend Dean Grose.
A post on the Rotary club's page said, "The sole survivor from the shooting in Seal Beach is the wife of one of our members. She is doing well! At the same time, we have great sadness for the senseless loss of life and the suffering that so many loved ones must bear."
Stretz's husband could not be reached for comment.
Long Beach Memorial Hospital spokeswoman Richelle Steele could not confirm the name but said the shooting survivor's condition was improving.
Stretz's daughter, who worked at the salon, was reportedly among those killed. Another family friend identified the daughter as Laura Webb. She is also known as Laura Elody, the name police released.
Another potential victim was identified by a local youth soccer club, Beach Futbol Club, as Michele Fast, wife of a team manager and mother of one of the players, according to a post on the club web site.
[For the record, 3:38 p.m. Friday: An earlier version of this post only referred to Laura Elody as Laura Webb.]
