Man fatally shot by officers on 91 Freeway is identified

91 Freeway fatal shooting
The Riverside County Coroner's office has identified the man shot to death by officers in a confrontation on the 91 Freeway in Corona.

Gary Dean Heil, 59, of Orange, was shot by officers who arrived at the scene near the 15 Freeway on Tuesday night to find him standing beside his car and allegedly armed with a gun, according to authorities.

According to a California Highway Patrol report, Heil did not obey several commands to drop his weapon.

Officers from the CHP and Corona police fired at Heil, according to the report. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The shooting and ensuing investigation caused traffic to back up for miles Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning.
