Earthquake: 3.1 quake strikes near Mecca

A shallow magnitude 3.1 earthquake was reported Tuesday morning nine miles from Mecca, Calif., according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The temblor occurred at 3:12 a.m. PDT at a depth of 21.7 miles.

According to the USGS, the epicenter was 12 miles from La Quinta, 12 miles from Coachella, 28 miles from Palm Springs and 74 miles from San Diego.

In the last 10 days, there have been three earthquakes magnitude 3.0 and greater centered nearby.
