Phone service out in several San Bernardino County communities [Updated]

October 3, 2011 |  1:43 pm

Wright All telephone services, include 911 and cellphone service, were down in the Wrightwood area in San Bernardino County, authorities said Monday afternoon.

The areas affected were Wrightwood, Canyon Hill, Oak Springs, Cajon, West Cajon Valley, Big Pines and Pinon Hills, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department.

County fire crews and other emergency personnel were patrolling the area while Verizon attempted to restore service, according to sheriff’s spokeswoman Jodi Miller. Apparently a Verizon “microfiber” was cut and a company crew was trying to repair it. It was unknown how the damage occurred or how long service would be knocked out.

[Updated at 2 p.m. Oct. 3: Verizon spokesman Jarryd Gonzales said one of the company’s fiber optic cables was cut by a utility crew in the area and that repairs were underway. Phone service is expected to be restored by 8 p.m., he said.]

Authorities said that, in the event of an emergency, residents may go to fire stations at 5980 Elm Street in Wrightwood or 9625 Beekly Road in Phelan.
