Marine from Twentynine Palms killed in Afghanistan

JordanA Marine from Twentynine Palms has been killed in combat in Afghanistan, the Pentagon announced Monday.

Lance Cpl. Jordan S. Bastean, 19, of Pekin, Ill., was killed Sunday in Helmand province on the border with Pakistan. He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, at Twentynine Palms.

The Three-Seven has only recently deployed to Afghanistan to replace the 1st Battalion, 5th Regiment from Camp Pendleton in the Sangin district, long a Taliban stronghold.

Bastean is the 23rd Marine from Twentynine Palms killed in Afghanistan. A Navy corpsman from the base was also killed. In Iraq, 115 Marines and sailors from Twentynine Palms were killed.
