West Covina robber grabs for woman's handbag, gets lunch bag

September 20, 2011 |  8:42 am

Shop A robber in West Covina was left holding the bag -- but not the one he wanted -- when he snatched a woman's lunch instead of her purse.

A 49-year-old woman was walking on the 1900 block of West Garvey Avenue about 2:14 p.m. Monday when a man got out of a white pickup truck and approached her with a small-caliber gun, said West Covina police Lt. Tommy Garcia.

The man tried to pull the woman's purse off her shoulder but instead grabbed a pouch with her lunch inside. When he got into the truck, the robber apparently realized his mistake and tossed the bag out as he drove off.

The police report did not specify what was in the lunchbag, Garcia said.

The suspect is described as a Latino between 25- and 30-years-old, 5-feet-5 with a thin build, wearing a black, short-sleeved shirt and driving a white, two-door Toyota truck with an extra cab.

He had a female passenger, described as a Latina between 25 and 30 years old, wearing a blue floral print dress.
