Southwest Airlines officials said Thursday that several of its airplanes’ exteriors have been vandalized with markings since February.

But contrary to recent reports, the markings have no relationship to any group or activity, the airline said.

In a statement on its website, the Dallas-based airline said it immediately reported the vandalism to federal law enforcement and intelligence agencies.

The agencies “all concluded that these markings have no affiliation to any known group or activity.”

Some media reports said the markings were Arabic writing.

The airline said it was taking the vandalism seriously, but that aircraft safety was not affected by the vandalism.
