Slain couple stuffed in trash were dead more than a month

August 24, 2011 |  3:10 pm

ZubekProsecutors said a Chatsworth couple killed and stuffed in trash bins had been dead for up to six weeks before being discovered.

The couple have not yet been identified by authorities. Investigators believe that the man and woman rented a room to the suspect in their slaying, Brent Darrin Zubek, 43,  who was arrested early Monday in Encino, faces six counts of assault with a firearm on a peace officer, one count of possession of a firearm by a felon, and one count of carrying a loaded and stolen firearm.

If convicted on all counts, Zubek faces a maximum sentence of multiple life terms in state prison.

Authorities continue to investigate Zubek in connection with the killings of a couple whose decomposing bodies were discovered in a trash bin Aug. 12 in the 20400 block of Lassen Street. No charges have been filed in connection with their deaths.

Zubek eluded authorities by constant movement and by donning disguises including wigs, LAPD officials said.

LAPD detectives tracked him to the intersection of Noeline Avenue and Ventura Boulevard on Sunday night, authorities said. When confronted, Zubek ran from officers before turning back and firing one shot with a handgun as he scaled a wall, police said.

Dozens of police including Metro K-9 officers and the SWAT team were called in to search for Zubek, who was eventually found on a roof of a home in the 4600 block of Libbit Avenue just off Ventura Boulevard. He was shot in the hip as he pulled a gun and pointed it at officers, police said.

During the search, someone set a fire that seriously damaged the dead couple's Chatsworth home. Authorities are still searching for a suspect in that blaze, which they described as suspicious.

Zubek was convicted in 1993 on federal bank robbery charges as part of a group dubbed the Hole in the Wall Gang, whose nickname stems from the gang's habit of entering the banks through a roof or opening in a wall.
