2 prisoners escape work crew near Laurel Canyon Park

August 5, 2011 |  6:23 pm

Authorities late Friday afternoon were searching for two prisoners who escaped from a work crew that was clearing brush near Laurel Canyon Park.

The prisoners were reported missing about 2 p.m. in the 8400 block of Mulholland Drive, nestled between Studio City and West Hollywood Hills. The two prisoners were part of an inmate fire crew with the Ventura County Sheriff's Department, according to Officer Sara Fadden of the Los Angeles Police Department.

One prisoner is described as a 19-year-old male Latino, 126 pounds and 5 feet, 4 inches tall. He has shoulder-length curly hair and was wearing a khaki longsleeve shirt and shorts, possibly green in color, Fadden said. The second inmate is described as a male Latino, about 19 years old and at least 6 feet tall, with black hair.

Authorities believe the men may have had access to a phone and were picked up by someone, so they are unlikely to still be in the immediate area. They are not believed armed, but police are telling residents to keep their doors and windows locked.
