A Los Angeles police officer was shot multiple times while questioning several pedestrians in South L.A. on Thursday, prompting the LAPD to call a citywide tactical alert.

Dozens of police units rolled into the area after the attack in search of the assailants. One suspect was in custody but others are at large.

The officer was rushed to a local hospital with serious wounds, LAPD officials said.

The shooting was reported at 2:45 p.m. near 66th Street and Western Avenue.
