Woman faces more charges in Mother's Day shootings

A Tustin Ranch woman accused of murdering her husband and attempting to murder her two sons on Mother’s Day is set to be arraigned Tuesday on additional charges, officials said.

Annamaria Magno Gana, 41, will be charged with another felony count of attempted murder and a special circumstance of lying in wait, in addition to existing felony charges of murder and attempted murder.

She also faces two sentencing enhancements: One for the personal discharge of a firearm causing death, and another for the personal discharge of a firearm causing great bodily injury, the Orange County district attorney’s office said Tuesday.

Gana fired a gun into a bedroom ceiling in her home about 4:30 p.m. May 8, authorities said.

After her husband, Antonio Potenciano Gana, 72, and their 16-year-old son ran into the room to see what had happened, she allegedly turned toward her husband and fatally shot him in the chest, officials said.

She then shot her teenage son in the arm as he attempted to flee from the bedroom, authorities said, but he managed to escape the house and call 911 from his cellphone.

Gana’s 9-year-old son saw his mother holding the gun and managed to wrestle it away from her and take it outside, authorities said. Gana’s two sons are currently in the care of a family member.

Antonio Gana was the former general manager of the Manila International Airport Authority, the agency which oversees the airport in the capital of the Philippines.

Gana, who is being held without bail, is to be arraigned on the additional charges in Santa Ana. If convicted, she faces life in prison without the possibility of parole.
