After a toddler, with injuries including fractured ribs, retinal hemorrhaging and bruises all over her body, died at a Santa Ana hospital, a 25-year-old man was arrested Sunday morning.

Juan Carlos Aguilar was booked on $100,000 bail a day after police were called to Coastal Community Hospital by the medical staff after they noticed suspicious injuries to the 18-month-old girl, said Santa Ana police Cmdr. Steve Colon.

The girl was unconscious and not breathing when her mother and the mother’s sister brought her to the hospital.

Police investigated and found that the girl had been in the care of her aunt and her aunt’s boyfriend, Aguilar, at the time her injuries occurred, Colon said.
