Fire at San Diego Zoo damages gift shop; animals unhurt
A fire of unknown origin early Monday morning badly damaged a gift store near the panda exhibit at the San Diego Zoo.
The pandas and other animals were not harmed, a zoo spokeswoman said. The zoo will be open today as scheduled.
A zoo security guard spotted flames at the gift shop in Panda Canyon at 1:12 a.m. during routine rounds. San Diego firefighters extinguished the fire but the shop was "badly damaged and the contents were lost."
The origin of the fire is under investigation.
