'Cat tax' on San Diego City Council committee's agenda
A San Diego City Council committee on Monday will consider a suggestion that the city require cat owners to register their pets and pay a fee.
A staff audit of the city's agreement with the county Department of Animal Services suggests the cash-strapped city could raise $500,000 if only 5% of cat owners complied and paid a fee of about $25.
The idea has drawn fire from Councilman Carl DeMaio, a mayoral candidate. "We need to send this idea to the litter box," he said.
