Carmageddon: L.A. buzzing over who will win JetBlue flight vs. bikes race

With the 405 and surrounding areas relatively quiet during the freeway closure, "Carmageddon" obsession has turned into #flightvsbike fandom on Twitter. Angelenos and online spectators rooted for the competitors, biking group Wolfpack Hustle and the JetBlue flight to Long Beach -- which expanded to include biker Gary Kavanagh, who will be on foot and taking public transportation to the finish line.

Before hitting the road, the six bicyclists challenging the JetBlue flight from Burbank to Long Beach were making bold predictions of victory. Even the blogger who was racing against them via jet was rooting for the cyclists before taking off for the airport.

Joe Anthony, 33, who will be taking the Jet Blue flight, said the race was meant to show "how feasible cycling is in L.A.," And, he said, "maybe how ridiculous it is to fly 40 miles."

Not much of a crowd gathered at the starting line at the intersection of Cahuenga and Chandler boulevards in North Hollywood. Along with the cyclists and a handful of supporters, the only others around were throngs of television news crews and other members of the press.
