Freeway construction worker hit by alleged drunk driver dies

Brandi A construction worker struck by an alleged drunk driver last week on the 91 Freeway in Riverside has died, authorities said Tuesday.

Barry Robert Steele, 51, of Beaumont, was hit Wednesday and died Sunday later at Riverside Community Hospital.

The driver, Brandi Holmes, 21, who allegedly had a suspended license and tried to leave the scene following the collision, was arrested and faces several charges, including reckless driving and driving under the influence.

Steele worked for Skanska USA, a contracting company that was doing work for the City of Riverside under Caltrans supervision, according to a Caltrans spokeswoman.
