Blaze breaks out during fireworks display in Irvine

July 4, 2011 | 11:14 pm

Hundreds of people were evacuated Monday night from a concert and fireworks display in Irvine after an ember trigged a minor brush fire, authorities reported.

Police Lt. Julie Engen said the fire started about 9:10 p.m. near the end of a Fourth of July celebration at Irvine High School sponsored by the Irvine Police Assn. The blaze burned a small section of brush between the school and the 5 Freeway.

When the fireworks crew could not put out the fire with their extinguishers, units from the Orange County Fire Authority put out the blaze. No one was injured, Engen said.
