July 14, 2011 |  4:34 pm

DZamora Colton Mayor David R. Zamora died Thursday afternoon after suffering a heart attack and crashing his car into a pole on his way home from City Hall, authorities said.

The single-car accident happened on La Cadena Drive in Colton in San Bernardino County.

Zamora was taken to Loma Linda University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. He was 56.

Few details of the accident have been made public.

City Manager Rod Foster released a statement praising Zamora’s service to the city, noting that just last week in his first state of the city address, the mayor was optimistic about a “new beginning” for the city.

“We are confident that his legacy will be well-served by the city continuing in the spirit of his leadership,’’ Foster said.

Tuesday night's City Council meeting has been canceled.
