Baby hit at Downtown Art Walk in critical condition

Stroller

A 2-month-old boy was in critical condition Friday after a motorist trying to park following the Downtown Art Walk veered onto the sidewalk and hit a mother and baby, police said.

The accident unfolded on Spring Street near 4th Street shortly after the arts event let out around 9:20 p.m. Thursday, said LAPD Officer Greg Baek. Traffic investigators said a motorist in a Cadillac was trying to parallel park and mistakenly hit the accelerator instead of the brake, jolting onto the sidewalk and striking the mother and the baby, who was in a stroller.

The mother was seriously injured, according to investigators.

The force of the crash sheared off a parking meter. LAPD Central Traffic was still investigating the incident, and the driver had not been arrested. The driver was not thought to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol, officials said.
