Train kills man lying on tracks in Ventura

June 5, 2011 |  8:18 pm

Authorities say a 20-year-old man who witnesses say was lying on the tracks was killed by a freight train in Ventura.

Ventura police say in a statement that the man was killed Sunday by a Union Pacific train.

The train's engineer told police he saw the man lying on the tracks when the train approached at 1:40 a.m. The engineer says he sounded the train's horn and the man looked up, but did not move out of the way in time.

Police and paramedics arrived to find the man lying under the train, and he was declared dead at the scene.

The man's name has not been released because relatives have not been notified, and the Ventura County medical examiner is investigating and will determine the official cause of death.
