Details were sketchy, but officials believe the deputy was not on duty and the person shot at may have been driving drunk, said Sgt. Michael Thomas of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

The deputy was uninjured but the condition of the other person was unclear.

What prompted the shooting was under investigation.

The call to the scene on Mateo Street near the 10 Freeway was received at 4:38 a.m.

It was unclear which agency would complete the investigation, Thomas said.

“It’s LAPD area, so we don’t know who's going to take the handle,” he said.
