Garden Grove man convicted in slaying outside Vietnamese New Year party

Thanh Van Tran A Garden Grove man was convicted of murder Thursday in the shooting death of a man outside a Vietnamese Lunar New Year party.

Thanh Van Tran, 29, left the January 2009 celebration at the D Saigon restaurant in Garden Grove and began arguing with another man, according to the Orange County district attorney's office.

The man's brother-in-law tried to stop the argument, prompting Tran to get a weapon from his car. Prosecutors said Tran fired three shots that struck Tommy Ngoc Ta, 40.

Ta, a father of three children, was pronounced dead at UC Irvine Medical Center.

Tran faces a maximum sentence of 40 years to life in state prison. He is scheduled to be sentenced July 29 at the Santa Ana courthouse. A co-defendant, Loi Van Nguyen, 32, is awaiting trial in the case, prosecutors said.
