LAPD investigates fatal overdose of jailed car theft suspect

Los Angeles police were investigating Tuesday the fatal overdose of a man who was being held at the department's Devonshire division jail, officials familiar with the case said.

The identity of the suspect was not immediately released, but law enforcement sources familiar with the case said he was pronounced dead of an apparent overdose around 10 p.m. Monday at Providence Holy Cross Hospital in Mission Hills.

The sources said the case stemmed from a stolen vehicle investigation that took place in the 15700 block of Lassen Street. The suspect was arrested in the investigation, during which a dog that lunged at an officer was shot.

There were no additional details about the circumstances of the incident in which multiple suspects were arrested.
