Woman fatally shot outside Irvine home; suspect in custody

Irvine
A woman was shot and killed Thursday afternoon outside her Irvine home, Irvine school officials said.

A suspect was taken into custody in connection with the killing a short time later, authorities said. The suspect, whose name was not immediately released, may have been found in South County, Irvine Police Lt. Julia Engen said.

The shooting took place about 2 p.m. near Turtle Rock Elementary School, said Irvine Unified spokesman Ian Hanigan. A teacher apparently heard the gunfire and reported it to police, Hanigan said.

No students were at the school and faculty and staff were escorted off campus one by one.
