June 22, 2011 |  9:40 am

Fatal

Irvine Police Department forensic supervisor Dan Sterling documents the scene of an accident just a few  yards from the gate to the private community of Shady Canyon.

A 21-year-old woman from Irvine was killed and an 18-year-old woman was injured in the solo-vehicle crash early Wednesday morning near the intersection of Shady Canyon Drive and Sunnyhill Drive, authorities said.

Officials said it appears that the car careened through a decorative planter, struck a tree and came to rest next to the sign for Shady Canyon.
