Law enforcement officials were searching for a jewelry store robber who fled after a store employee fatally shot his two partners Friday in San Juan Capistrano.

Authorities are still investigating what happened at Monaco Jewelers, 33955 Doheny Park Road. about 11:15 a.m. An employee there opened fire, killing two suspects, and the remaining suspect fled, authorities said.

Sheriff’s deputies evacuated and searched several nearby stores and set up roadblocks, officials said. After about four hours the area search was called off.

Investigators are working to identify the two dead men and are examining evidence found in a vehicle thought to have been used by the would-be robbers, Orange County sheriff's Lt. Steve Doan said.

Asked if the store employee might face any charges in the shooting, he said: “At this point, it’s too early to tell.”
