Car slams into cyclists; one critically injured
The 27-year-old driver of the car was arrested and investigators were looking into the possibility that she had been drinking, said Officer Rosario Herrera of the Los Angeles Police Department.
Broadcast reports from the scene suggested that officers also are looking into whether she might have been texting or been otherwise distracted. Her name has not been released.
There also may have been mitigating factors, said reporters from KABC Channel 7 and KTLA Channel 5, who spoke with officers at the scene. Some of the cyclists may have been stopped in the road under a street light that was not operating, creating especially dark conditions.
The cyclists were apparently part of a group called Midnight Ridazz that rides at night. The group, perhaps 100 cyclists in all, had visited a scenic outlook in the Baldwin Hills area.
"It looked like she was stopping, but she just kept going," said one unidentified witness interviewed on television. Another likened what happened to a bowling ball knocking down pins.
Video footage showed crumpled bicycles at the scene. The windshield on the car at the center of the investigation was smashed.
