Man whose burned body was found in La Palma may have killed himself, police say

A man whose body was found burned Wednesday morning near a strip mall in La Palma may have killed himself, police said.

Police were alerted to the scene by a witness who called 911 about 6:15 a.m., said Sgt. Raul Morales.

The caller reported seeing a man on fire near the 7002 block of Moody Street, near the Cerritos Plaza Shopping Center.

First responders arrived and extinguished the flames but the man was dead, Morales said.

A can of gasoline was found near the body and the witness told police there was no one else in the area at the time, Morales said.

“There was no sign of trauma to the body other than the fire,” Morales said. “Of course, it won’t be concluded until an autopsy is conducted and an investigation is completed.”

Police did not immediately release the victim’s name, saying only he was an Asian man in his 50s or early 60s.
