'Bomb-factory' defendant remains silent, is sentenced to 30 years in prison

George Djura Jakubec, the 55-year-old unemployed software consultant who admitted to stockpiling explosives at his home near Escondido, was sentenced Monday to 30 years in prison on bank-robbery charges.

The sentence was part of a plea bargain with federal prosecutors. In exchange for admitting that he had kept explosive materials and built bombs, weapons charges against him were dismissed.

Jakubec remained silent during the sentencing in federal court. His estranged wife submitted a letter asking for mercy and blaming his actions on mental and financial problems.

Jakubec was arrested Nov. 18 when a landscaper at the rental home was injured by an explosion. The home was destroyed by a controlled-burn Dec. 9.
