60-year-old jet skier rescued from kelp bed near Catalina

June 13, 2011 |  9:14 pm

A 60-year-old man on a jet ski who was trapped in a kelp bed near Santa Catalina Island was rescued Monday evening, officials said.

The man was reported missing after he failed to return the island, prompting a search-and-rescue mission by the U.S. Coast Guard and Los Angeles County lifeguards, officials said.

A Coast Guard MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew spotted the man tangled in a large clump of kelp. He was plucked from the kelp by a lifeguard rescue boat, the Coast Guard said.

Officials said the man was not injured. His name was not released.
