Student shot on way to Jefferson High School

May 9, 2011 |  8:58 am

Police investigate the shooting of a student near Jefferson High School in Southeast Los Angeles.

A student was shot early Monday morning on his way to Jefferson High School in South Los Angeles, authorities said.

The 12th-grader was taken to a hospital, where his condition was not immediately available.

Police said five to six shots were fired at 7:25 a.m. at 41st Street and Compton Avenue. There were no immediate suspects or motive.

Principal Michael Taft said the student was enrolled in the school’s teacher preparation program.

The shooting was far enough away that a lockdown of the campus was unnecessary, but teachers and others on the school’s crisis team would be counseling students, Taft said.
